Together, Jennifer and Darrell bring more than 25 years of shared experience as performers, teachers, and partners in music — shaped by careers on some of the world’s great stages and in leading training institutions. From The Metropolitan Opera and Juilliard, to Carnegie Hall and Glyndebourne, they bring a rare combination of real-world performance experience, rigorous technical knowledge, and deeply individualized teaching.
They combine structure with curiosity, technical clarity with creativity, and high standards with warmth and encouragement. Their work recognizes that every singer brings a unique instrument, background, and set of goals — and that there is no single path to vocal freedom.
Their partnership extends beyond the studio. Having performed together throughout their careers, they share a deep musical understanding and an instinctive way of working side by side. That collaboration now shapes Babidge Studios, where singers benefit from two distinct perspectives, a shared technical foundation, and a unified commitment to helping each artist grow.
At the heart of their work is a simple goal: to give singers the tools, understanding, and confidence to become their own best teachers — and to experience the joy and freedom that come from truly knowing their voice.

About Jennifer
Jennifer Welch-Babidge is a soprano, voice teacher, and Metropolitan Opera National Council winner whose career has spanned more than two decades on many of the world’s leading stages. A graduate of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, she has performed extensively at the Met and with major companies and orchestras throughout the United States and around the world.
Having worked with internationally renowned conductors, directors, and artists throughout her career, Jennifer has always been especially drawn to the creative process of bringing a character to life. With over seven years of study in movement and drama, she developed a deep interest in how vocal choices, physicality, and dramatic intention can work together.
In one of her signature roles, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Jennifer’s real-life pregnancy was incorporated into the storyline itself, creating an unusual dramatic interpretation that was featured on the front page of The New York Times.
Jennifer brings that same spirit of exploration and depth of experience into her teaching. She is known for her ability to quickly identify what a singer needs, offer clear and practical tools, and create an environment where singers feel both challenged and supported. Her teaching blends technical precision with curiosity and flexibility, helping singers build reliable coordination while developing the confidence to make their own artistic choices.
Described by Playbill as a “dramatic risk-taker” with a “supple, shimmering soprano voice,” Jennifer has also been praised by The Washington Post for a soprano that “soared consistently in all registers.”

Her teaching is curious, practical, and highly individualized. Rather than insisting on one particular approach, Jennifer helps singers understand what their own voice is doing, recognize what may be getting in the way of efficient coordination, and develop the tools they need to sing with greater freedom, consistency, and confidence.
About Darrell
His students have gone on to perform at many of the world’s leading opera houses, including The Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Vienna State Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, and San Francisco Opera, and have received top honors in major international competitions including the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, Operalia, and the George and Nora London Foundation Competition.
A particularly important part of Darrell’s work is long-term mentorship. Many singers continue to work with him as their careers develop from conservatory and young artist programs into established professional careers. These connections often span many years, developing into lifelong relationships built on trust, artistic growth, and a deep understanding of the individual singer. His mentorship extends beyond vocal technique to repertoire, artistic development, career decisions, and the changing demands of a professional singing life.
Darrell has a keen ear, broad stylistic experience, and a strong sense of how technique, repertoire, musicianship, and performance all fit together. His approach is thoughtful and exacting, but always aimed at helping singers become more secure, more independent, and more fully themselves.
Darrell Babidge is a baritone, voice teacher, and educator. He currently serves as Chair of the Voice Faculty at The Juilliard School, where he has taught since 2019.
As an operatic and concert soloist, Darrell has performed throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, including performances at the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall. He has also performed the title role in Britten’s Owen Wingrave with Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Alongside his performing career, Darrell has built an extensive career as a teacher and mentor. He has taught and mentored developing professional singers through programs including the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, the Aspen Music Festival, Santa Fe Opera, and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.
